I'm done talking about AI

Hey there. πŸ‘‹

Recently I put out a short form video encouraging those that use generative AI in their music to leave it behind. I shared a hard drive that had 12 years of my life - love, breakups, pain, depression, joy. This was 12 years of growing my skills. Majority of the songs and ideas on this drive aren't good, but they were progress.

In a world where I felt as though every creator was shaming AI music makers, I wanted to be someone who wasn't here to shame, but to share the beauty of making real music.

Well...that fucking backfired.

People who use generative AI started filling in the comments, justifying why they use it without even listening to a single word that I said in my video. I even had endorsed Suno artists making ads in my comment section.

Here's a paraphrase of one comment that stood out in particular,

"Unless you've used something like Suno to understand it, you can't criticize it."

That's like saying you can't criticize drunk driving if you've never driven drunk.

This is who we are dealing with...

I was actually baffled at these responses. So much so that I contemplated just deleting the post in the first place. But, I came to a much more important realization that I think we as creatives need to focus on.

The realization.

These people who are generative music makers want what we have. They desire to be able to confidently create music. They don't even realize that their reliance on generative AI is making it impossible for them to get better.

The best skill that you can have as a music maker is your taste. Your taste is defined by your ability to listen. When you have a 'tool' that shows you something that sounds better than where you're at, you start to listen to that more and more.

At this point, it feels less of a reliance and more of a dependency. Me suggesting to a group that uses this shit is no different than trying to convince a heroin user to stop using.

They simply won't listen because their dependency is too strong.

I admit, I'm probably making an assload of assumptions at this point. I don't know every single person's intention with it and it's not fair for me to assume.

I just find it strange that...

...the CEO of Suno said that people don't enjoy making music anymore...

...once talented artists are being paid $10k-$15k a month to shill positive coverage...

...generative AI is polluting streaming services, diminishing royalties...

...AI literally steals and rips direct works from artists that poured their soul into it...

...AI has extremely harmful environmental and community impacts...

and yet AI 'artists' are still going to claim their artistry.

Bananas folks, bananas.

Why I'm not going to talk about it anymore.

I've found that investing my time to try to reach those gripped by the shackles of stolen creativity has been a wasted and exhausted effort. So much so that it's starting to put me into this internet psychosis.

Instead of preaching on the internet about why someone shouldn't do something, I need to just double down on making insanely cool shit. Any time that I put out work, my main hope is that it's the last video someone watches because they're so inspired to make something.

This is in no way me saying that we just need to forget it and move on, but the loudest answer to fight back against AI isn't to engage in intellectual sparring, because that just doesn't work anymore.

If you follow American politics, you know that some people will not change their mind with every bit of evidence in front of them.

Instead, the answer is to be so immersed in our own work, and so obsessed with growing, collaborating, and creating that we don't have the energy to give a single fuck about what these clowns are doing.

My mission is to still treat others with kindness and grace. I don't just want to be a dick to someone who is lost and clearly being taken advantage of by tech bros that have purposefully engineered this dependency.

I'm holding out hope that they come to their senses. I'm hoping that my heart softens. I'm hoping that people will embrace the creative renaissance in a post creative AI world.

I've said it before, but true art prevails.

See you in the next one. ✌️

P.S. As you may now, I'm building a new Skool community called Radical Creativity Studios. It's going to house a new production course, weekly group calls, mentoring, production breakdowns, and a place to collaborate with others.

I'm thinking of doing an 'open house' - a free group call where we can all hop on, ask questions about the community, get production advice and guidance, and just get to know each other before you decide to join. This will not be a sales/pitch call, it's purely for you to get a taste of what the community will be like.

If you want an invite to the call, just sign up to the RCS waitlist. I'll be sending the call invites out next week.

Looking forward to it, hope to see you there!
